Adopting a dog is a very big step for any family! It takes commitment, love, patience and a lot of work. But it is worth it to have that new pup as a member of your family.

It's important for the children in your family to be familiar with welcoming a new dog to your home and so we went ahead and made a list of some great books to read with them to get them prepared for this exciting new adventure you are about to embark on!

1. Can I Be Your Dog?

A heart-tugging dog adoption story told through letters--deeply sincere and almost desperate pleas for a forever home--from the dog, himself

This picture book shares the tale of Arfy, a homeless mutt who lives in a box in an alley. Arfy writes to every person on Butternut Street about what a great pet he'd make. His letters to prospective owners share that he's house broken He has his own squeaky bone He can learn to live with cats But, no one wants him. Won't anyone open their heart--and home--to a lonesome dog? Readers will be happily surprised to learn just who steps up to adopt Arfy.

The concept alone for this book melts my heart and just makes me want to cuddle Arfy and give him all the love I can. It shows how much it means for the dog to be adopted and how much of an impact it will have on his happiness!

2. Ladybug Girl and the Rescue Dogs

Lulu is excited to meet all the rescue dogs when the pet-adoption fair comes to her local farmers' market. She wants to take all of them home--but she already has Bingo, and Mama says one dog is enough for their family. That doesn't mean Lulu can't help, though. It's time for Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad--her friends Grasshopper Girl and Bumblebee Boy--to step in! The Bug Squad can do all kinds of little but important things, like brush the dogs, play with them, and bring them water and food. And then Lulu comes up with the perfect plan to help the dogs find their forever homes. Her idea is such a success that the Bug Squad knows they'll be back again next week. Together, they can help every dog get adopted.

This book shows children that they can help with many tasks such as grooming, feeding, and walking the dogs. And the story has a great message behind it which is good for the kids!

3. Before You Were Mine

Adopting a shelter dog can come with many questions, but also endless love.

A little boy imagines what life was like for his new dog before he adopted him from a shelter. Maybe he had a boy who loved him, but the family had to move and couldn't keep him. Maybe he belonged to someone who didn't appreciate how mischievous puppies can be. Maybe he was treated badly, and now he can be shown all the love he's been missing. This boy wonders about all of these things, but maybe they don't matter. Because now, his dog is home.

This book shows the many different stories that an adoption dog could have had before they came to be yours and it is heart warming all the way through!
